Aiden gazed at Keira for a moment, openly, grimly calculating, none of his usual easy affability evident in his face. It was, she realized with some surprise, perfectly apparent that he was older than she was, and had seen a great deal of the world in that time. But as she thought it, he took a deeper breath and let it out, amusement settling across his face like a lace veil, decorating his features into something lighter and easier to look at and more like the face he normally presented to her.

“Now, ma’am*,” he said, sticking his tongue between his teeth rakishly, “I happen to know a couple of ways to fix a headache.”
