I ask myself this all the time.
Unfortunately I also ask myself things all the time like “why don’t droids have any basic fundamental rights” and “what kind of culture would that engender among artificial intelligences” and then I lie awake staring wide-eyed into the dark with my covers up to my chin imagining sweet innocent BB-8 in some grimy old hangar next to a beat-to-shit ancient R-unit whose memory has been wiped fifteen times who has had more owners than it even remembers but who still has a vague circuit-memory of that one master who knelt down bright-eyed and looked at it and said “we’ll be friends forever!” and fifteen years later sold it for parts.
