An artist on tumblr https://icpe.tumblr.com/ makes ‘cute’ witcher doodles. Many of us reblog them.

Many of us do not realise that this artist is racist towards WOC in TWN.

(Historically, POC have been mocked by white people for having large lips - see golliwogs https://href.li/?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golliwog, Jim Crow https://href.li/?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereotypes_of_African_Americans, etc)

Any one of these pictures alone probably wouldn’t be cause enough for a white person to be alarmed. But together, they make a damning collage.

Fandom racism can lurk in seemingly benign places. For POC, the patterns are clear. For white people, they might be harder to spot. We need to start recognising them, too.

And the artist is aware. They blocked every single person who pointed out the racism instead of engaging at all.

She has indeed, as well as posted a pseudo ’apology https://icpe.tumblr.com/post/642527622788694016/ok-so-once-again-im-racist-ah-good-old’ (Do not read the notes, it’s full of racist defenders).

The reason her ‘apology’ is not enough is because a) she has failed to recognise why her drawings are offensive, b) she makes excuses for herself, c) she shows no signs of wishing to grow or make amends, and d) her solution is to delete the art and suggest she won’t draw witcher content in the future.

I suggest you do not waste your energy engaging her or her followers. We have been perfectly concise in our arguments. This is wilful, racist ignorance.

Additionally, her deviantart https://href.li/?https://www.deviantart.com/ayej account and her vk account (essentially Russian facebook) contains some even more astoundingly racist http://web.archive.org/web/20210208152600/https://vk.com/wall-157099776_6137 art https://vk.com/ayejcomics?z=photo-157099776_457242396%2Fwall-157099776_5796, which is for some reason not on tumblr.

so e) the apology is also insincere because she’s not removing the racist art from anywhere except where people who might have heard that there was a problem would be looking for it. The tag in Russian on the non-apology also states that she will continue to post art of Triss to her vk group; the translation provided was roughly:

“from now on Triss art will only be in my VK (vkontakte) group :) apparently only we have a healthy sense of humor and [self-irony]”

I second inber above; icpe and her hardcore followers know what she’s doing is wrong and are continuing full steam ahead. We’ve pointed out her racism for people who may not have noticed it. We’re not going to change her or her follower’s minds, so we shouldn’t be wasting energy on it.

If you still are worried about this artist’s feelings above the feelings of the fans of color this is actively hurting, then you absolutely know where you stand on this issue and there’s no real need to debate it further.

I only made the post in the first place because the only art I’d seen of hers was cute and I almost bought one of her notecard packs. I just wanted to warn others so they know what they’d really be supporting. (Your picture was not posted)
