An artist on tumblr https://icpe.tumblr.com/ makes ‘cute’ witcher doodles. Many of us reblog them.

Many of us do not realise that this artist is racist towards WOC in TWN.

Example here https://icpe.tumblr.com/post/187371975499/witcher-3-doodles-317-im-getting-ready-for: Triss depicted by this artist in the game vs in the show. Note the heavy, low eyebrows and gold hoop earrings - both racialized caricatures of Black women and of Romani women.

See a second example of brow ridge stereotype drawn by the artist here https://icpe.tumblr.com/post/618198249211412480#notes. (The term ‘lowbrow’ is rooted in bigotry; phrenology https://href.li/?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phrenology was considered a science used https://href.li/?https://pages.vassar.edu/realarchaeology/2017/03/05/phrenology-and-scientific-racism-in-the-19th-century/ to ‘prove’ the inferiority of non-white humans.)

This artist continues WOC stereotyping by giving TWN Yennefer enormous https://icpe.tumblr.com/post/616295428689903616/witcher-netflix-comics-21 red lips https://icpe.tumblr.com/post/190179329679/witcher-team-playing-tabletop-rpg-in-a-basement in every post https://icpe.tumblr.com/post/613857075381059584/witcher-netflix-comics-17. (Historically, POC have been mocked by white people for having large lips - see golliwogs https://href.li/?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golliwog, Jim Crow https://href.li/?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereotypes_of_African_Americans, etc)

Any one of these pictures alone probably wouldn’t be cause enough for a white person to be alarmed. But together, they make a damning collage.

Fandom racism can lurk in seemingly benign places. For POC, the patterns are clear. For white people, they might be harder to spot. We need to start recognising them, too.

I urge you to read [profile] bomberqueen17 https://tmblr.co/mEi4sKUjTkzs4ila4vEdnuA ’s original post, and to not support this artist.

I want to thank [profile] inber https://tmblr.co/mYULgllDfpLLW5nMee3g4UA so much for summarizing this so neatly, that’s something that’s quite hard for me to do.

And I want to add on that there’s a follow-up https://bomberqueen17.tumblr.com/post/641105905903157248/so-have-you-asked-that-artist-their-side-or-has, because so many people’s immediate response to seeing this is “oh no how must that artist feel to be called out”– 1) the artist knows, blocks everyone who attempts to point it out, has known for some time, and by the pattern of art is clearly doing this on purpose, and 2) why is that response so common and meanwhile why does no one ever think “oh the poor fans of color who’ve had to see this artist reblogged so much, how must they feel”

and I want everyone who’s had that response to sit with that for a moment and think about it.

But also, to clarify, as I said in the first follow-up, that wasn’t a callout post. It was a warning to all the rest of us. If you’re going to continue to reblog that person’s stuff, then you shouldn’t wonder why there aren’t any fans of color left around.

If you didn’t know, you didn’t know, but now you’ve had it pointed out. (Your picture was not posted)
