I can’t stress to you how fucking important it is to tell your child you’re proud of them TO THEIR FACE. Don’t fucking wait until the moment they go into hysterics. Don’t wait until they tell you that they don’t think you’re proud of them. FUCKING TELL THEM EVERY DAY. Even if it’s something you don’t understand, and they’re BEAMING, you fucking tell that child you’re proud of them. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

It makes me sad that 2k of you relate to this. I’M PROUD OF YOU OK. I’M PROUD OF ALL OF YOU AND I LOVE YOU.

Slight derailing maybe but I started doing this with my adult friends as well. You gift-wrapped my present like this? Well, you did a great job, I’m proud of you! You finally did the dishes after procrastinating on it for a few days? Amazing job, friend, look at you be productive! You did the Thing you were dreading so much? I’m so proud I’m about to start a fanclub for you.

My friends say it to me sometimes as well and it’s the best feeling.

At work my coworker and I started saying to one another, completely sarcastically and insincerely, “You’re doing a great job!” and it passed into being kind of a meme, a running joke, and yet– and yet– every time we say it, we feel better. It’s uncanny that it works so well even when we’re kidding.

Because, I mean, are we kidding? We’re both doing our best!

“You’re doing a great job,” I say, poking my head in the door.

“You’re doing a great job,” he says back, and I go and sit at my desk with a weird little glow in my chest.

(Relatedly we discovered that you can go to google translate and type “you’re doing a great job” into the box and then pick a language other than English in the drop-down and press the little sound button to have it pronounced for you and the machine voice will pronounce it according to the phonetic rules of whatever language you’ve picked and it is good for one (1) bout of screaming hysterics per week, because it is in fact very funny.)
