Millions Of Christmas Gifts May Arrive Late Due To Overload At The Postal Service https://www.npr.org/2020/12/23/949827797/millions-of-christmas-gifts-may-arrive-late-due-to-overload-at-the-postal-servic:
I was thinking of you,
ghostalservice
https://tmblr.co/mLc9nz7zzp6AZBuqX_ibHaw, when mom sent me this article
(and wondered why my mom would send me an article for you?) especially
since it’s in the Boston area, but when I finally got to read it I found
out it’s because my second cousin’s kids are in it, featured as the
Adorable Moppets Waiting For Presents. I hope they got them, but likely
they would have a good Christmas anyway.
This did make me spend forever working out how I’m related to them though. So A1 is my dad’s first cousin, and A1 thus is my first cousin, once removed. A1′s son A2 is thus my second cousin– no removes, as he’s my generation. Then these children are A2′s children, A1′s grandchildren– that makes them my… ??? Second cousins once removed, I believe.
How do other languages do this? Is it less cumbersome? I don’t need to draw a chart back through A1 to A1′s mom who was Dad’s father’s sister, and thence to our common ancestors (my great-grandparents, the lil tykes’ great-great grandparents), do I? How do you efficiently convey these things?
I know it’s a pretty distant relationship at this point, but it’s worth mentioning that the face of the little girl in the picture is pretty identical to my best memory of her dad, who I have spoken to extensively as an adult but remember best as a child at family reunions. That’s just– his whole face, LOL. (Only pic I have is here https://www.flickr.com/photos/dragonlady7/3601999570/in/album-72157619264862387/, he’s dead center and you can’t see the resemblance as strongly, but it’s there.) Funny how that works.
(I haven’t met those kids, or their mom, but probably I would have at Dad’s funeral if these were any kind of normal times. Maybe they’ll Zoom in? I would like to meet them. Alas. Maybe in the fall(?) when we do the interment??) (Your picture was not posted)
