Te vigilans oculis, animo te nocte requiro
victa iacent solo cum mea membra toro.
vidi ego me tecum falsa sub imagine somni;
somnia tu vinces, si mihi vera venis.
My waking eyes, my sleeping soul, both seek you,
while alone in bed my conquered limbs lie tangled.
I saw myself with you in the hallucination of a dream,
but you – your truth would surpass all fantasy.
Only – come.
(Anon.)
velvetcadence wanted to see a thing that I am working on. In the 20 seconds or so of time I don’t spend doing work or recovering from work, one of the ways I entertain myself is doing literary translations from minor/lesser-known and non-classical Latin poets.
This particular poem is by a lovely Anon. It isn’t a really exciting poem, and is pretty straightforward; I haven’t translated it literally, so a bit of license is taken with the grammar. The sense, though, is the same, and I think it’s rather pretty.
Oh this is beautiful.
