even the semis are sleeping tonight in the dark off the on-ramp lit up like Christmas for the sake of whatever traffic after midnight comes hurrying southbound brights on through the long night

oh gosh. when i was young and first doing a lot of highway driving i remember going past one of those little pull-over sections on the Thruway and there was a line of semis pulled over so the drivers could rest and the headlights were off but the running lights were lit for safety and I was so bewitched with the image of them– their size, their quiescence, the geometric lines of the lights in the velvet-dark of that long stretch just east of Syracuse where there’s nothing for a good long while– I wasn’t sure what to do with the image, I thought they were like constellations, or something, and I was so overtired and shouldn’t have been driving either but I did a lot of ill-advised late-night or early-morning highway driving because my time management skills were terrible then as they still are, and I think I chewed over trying to make that image into something the whole rest of the way home, two hours more, and I never did come up with anything good, but here, twenty years later, someone else is too.
