Even “menial” work is beloved by various people if it’s given the respect it deserves and folks dont need to worry about - um - starving to death and dying of illness?

I legitimately love delivering pizzas! If it were sustainable i wouldn’t mind at all doing it for the rest of my life! One of my best friends absolutely loves cleaning, and the only reason she quit cleaning professionally is that she was sick of the ways she was treated. My stepfather has been a carpenter and construction worker for 30 years, despite being a highly qualified graphic designer and architect, bc the man just fuckin loves construction work. For every “menial/undesireable” job available, there is someone who is happy to work it, if not for the stigma and need to survive. And for the truly awful ones? Like slaughterhouse cleanup, sewer maintenance, roadkill pickup, etc? With UBI they could almost all be mechanized, saving people from having to do grueling and dangerous jobs they really don’t have to do.

HILARIOUS ENDNOTE: I DO SLAUGHTERHOUSE CLEANUP AS A VOLUNTEER

I do! my sister has a slaughterhouse on her farm and my job is the pre-cleaning and occasionally much of the post-cleaning!

Gross jobs are not unrewarding, and I like how palpable the difference is when I’m done.

The state food safety inspector came by while I was pre-cleaning, this time; I had just sprayed the entire room down with hot water , and was spritzing soap onto the ceiling, which he’d told us we had to clean after the last inspection, and it could not have been better-timed for him to walk in the door (unscheduled) and look around at the steam and me standing on a chair with a soap bottle and a scrub brush, and I had assumed he was my brother-in-law coming to mess with me so I was like “YEAH YEAH WHAT BUDDY” and he was like “… I’ll leave you to it.”

They pay me sometimes, when there’s money, but I made enough in unemployment this year that I told them I didn’t need money. I got paid in broken chicken parts and a bag full of cabbages, this last time.
