My fannish-osmotic understanding about the First Order is that they carved out a modest and unassuming presence at the edge of the “civilized” Galaxy, and then quietly expanded into the Unknown Regions and did whatever the fuck they pleased out there, who even knows. Certainly not the government of the New Republic, which was still officially deeming them Not A Threat as of the Hosnian atrocity and mostly didn’t survive long enough to reconsider that position. So, yeah, the firing of Starkiller Base represents a major escalation; it’s the real opening salvo in their armed engagement with the New Republic, and they don’t have any prior experience fighting an open war against an equally-advanced opposing force. But they’ve been colonizing underdeveloped worlds and consolidating power there for decades at this point, so there’s a solid basis for the assertion that they’ve been practicing ruthlessness on the unsuspecting inhabitants of backwater planets for twenty-odd years now. (Finn’s first irl experience in the field, just prior to Jakku, is being deployed to a mining colony to suppress an attempt at labor negotiations. Phasma sends his fireteam into the conference room to shoot the negotiators. Finn can’t make himself shoot; Slip does it for him.)
Fascinating! See, I knew most of that but I had not encountered the story of the mining “negotiations” before so– I don’t want to read every dang tie-in just to know what the heck is up, argh. Oh well. I mean, I want to read them, but I resist the necessity.
