:O I like this a lot

I was up waaaaaayyyy too late last night like the human disaster I am because I was supposed to pack my shit and load my car this morning so I could work 8 hours and drive 5 today, and my brain was like noooope.

So instead I went looking for– I forget– and found what I was writing most recently before fanfic.

That was from a weekend trip, a bunch of us had arranged to come to a particular camping thing (an SCA event), and in the end, only I and one other friend could actually make it, so we did, and instead of doing literally anything, we just sat by our tents and got hammered.

This dude, K, actually was just texting me yesterday after not hearing from him for a little bit, so I was thinking of him anyway. He’s like a decade older than me, and has had many careers, beginning with livestock farming as a child, and then he ran away and joined the circus and worked in a sideshow, and then he was a professional chef, and then a Navy recruiter straight-up deceived him into joining up. He wound up being an on-ship firefighter (Damage Control, AKA the suicidal motherfuckers who will do literally anything to keep the ship from sinking and killing everyone– seriously, he was not hired for a civilian firefighting job later because apparently Navy firefighters have trouble remembering that it’s okay not to put the fire out if you’d have to die to do it), and then because that wasn’t fucked-up enough, he wound up joining Explosives and Ordnance Disposal for the Navy SEALS. He served in the first Gulf War and in the operation in Mogadishu that they made the movie Blackhawk Down about.

He got blown up once, in the Persian Gulf, and has scars where hunks of his friend’s skeleton embedded themselves in his body.

After the Navy he wound up a geologist. He mostly works in oil spill remediation now, although I’m not sure what his current job entails. His wife is a very sweet and weird and lovely artist with a series of hilarious impersonation routines she does as set pieces; she also belly dances and weaves and spins and sews. (He also sews beautifully.) The two of them re-enact just about every time period, though they’ve moved away from Civil War and into World War II by now. She’s been with him since before the Navy; basically, they’ve been together their entire adult lives, but did not marry until somewhat recently. (I mean. Like ten years ago. But, relative to their timeline, a while.)

So I have a bunch of the stories he’s told me over the years reblogged from myself in my queue because I had forgotten I wrote all those and they’re Really Something.
