So. On Etsy. My camera store sells film developing and 8mm movie transfers. Things like that. I haven’t put up some of the other digitization stuff we do because it’s too hard to explain and, not to put too fine a point on it, people are fucking morons.

Our #1 question is “What’s the address to send my film to?” which is like, understandable, except that. 1) I overlaid the address text over the photo in the image that goes with the listing, because people don’t read the 2) oh yes the listing, which has the address in it, and 3) when you place an order you get an email from us, which contains the address.

I got one of these emails recently, and the woman wrote “I purchased your transferring service, where do I send my reel to reel tape?”

and I wrote back, spider senses tingling from that one little phrase,

“If what you have is reel-to-reel audio, DO NOT SEND IT TO US, we cannot do it!” and I also told her the address.

She was shipping this from the UK, so this is no insignificant postage or commitment of time.

She did not write back. I waited to hear from her.

Instead, today, a reel-to-reel audio tape arrived from the UK.

So either she can’t fucking read, or she can’t fucking read, and I’m not sure which is true, but anyway, I wrote back to her, and was like “As I said in the message immediately preceding this one, I cannot process reel-to-reel audio, so I’ll be mailing this back to you and withholding the charge from your refund!” but like.

Of all the dumb customer service encounters I have had in my life, etsy convos occupy at least the top 5. I don't know what it is that brings out the really extra ludicrous dumbass-ity on there, but it's certainly something special.
