yeah ok this 8mm reel really is from 1939, it’s the World’s Fair in NYC and ships at port in NY Harbor.

This is from the same order with the ladies in the aprons I was talking about yesterday, and someone asked for a photo and this is the best I can do, Grandma keeps moving around. I think all of these are from the late 30s and early 40s, so that’s a more concrete era on this– looking back at the party dresses, they’ve got the built-up shoulders of 40s fashion more than the sloping ones you get in the 50s.

cut for images, blurry old lady in calico apron:

So it’s clearly an apron over a dress, and the apron has thick straps, and then the skirt goes all the way around to protect the whole bottom of the dress. In other bits of the video you can see whole body shots of people, the aprons are only just below the knee in length, and are somewhat less full than the dress underneath, probably to economize on fabric and make them easier to wash. Often the lower hem has ric-rac trim a few inches above the bottom as decoration. Sometimes there are pockets.

I 1000% have patterns for this bookmarked on my Pinterest account but I can’t get it to reset my password so I can’t access any of that.
