To the “Stop celebrating” viewpoint, here’s a counter-argument to consider:

It is important to celebrate, and do so loudly and in public, to drive home to the Trump Supporters that their views are not welcome.

Like all wannabe dictators, Trump isn’t the threat directly. That comes from the people who lift him up to power and who he directs in their violence.

But they’re bullies at heart, and showing them that they are not dominant, that they are not “the winners” will help cow them. They will still be violent, yes, but disrupting their momentum is important.

Also a large part of Trump’s appeal was the fuck-your-feelings swagger and the more time the collective anima of the culture spends pointing and fucking laughing the less of that remains. Sure, he’s looked ridiculous to all of us this whole time, but now that nobody feels like they have to tiptoe around him it’s become much more open laughter and mockery.

it’s real hard to get your defiant antisocial macho feelings fix from something everyone’s just straight-up howling with laughter at.

It could backfire, sure, but there’s a lot of power in this kind of mockery and momentum.

(The only downer takes I think are valid are all the POC who are like “yeah sure we gave you a victory let’s start counting down the time between the last thank Black women! take and the first now be quiet and sit down so the neoliberals can go back to what they’ve been doing all al– oh time’s up they’ve already started.”)
