nanowrimo 2011, unfinished, no i don't know where I was going with this, Anonymous

oh yes, i rediscovered it recently and started picking at it. That’s the one I have no memory ever of writing! I’ve done NaNo intermittently since 2002, so I have any number of old versions kicking around my computer at any given time, but– this is the one that’s clearly based on a book I must’ve read sometime around then but then I never did anything with it.

It’s a sign of how shitty 2011 was for me that it’s only 30k long. In a good November I’d hit the 50k wordcount in the first week, but I clearly never did, that year.

"She ran away, didn’t she?“ Makat said. "Rumors said she left you.”

Eyat regarded him for a long moment, processing the blinding rage that

came up in his chest and settled in his throat. “There was blood on the doorjamb,” he said, very calmly, looking down at his hands, “and one of her ear studs was lying on the floor like it had been torn out and thrown there. Her wedding ring was in the weeds next to the path to the door. She left most of her normal clothes, and took a random assortment of her town clothes, and some of mine. She left her good shoes, and took no extra socks. I found our guard dog dead. She loved that dog. She would never have hurt her. Someone had killed the dog with a pistol. I had my pistol on me, and she didn’t carry one."

There was a silence, broken only by the fire hissing. Finally, Makat

said, a little less smooth and self-assured, "You seem pretty certain.”

“I am,” Ekat said. “If you don’t think I turned over every blade of

grass on that property, searched every inch of ground, you never knew me at all.”

No one said anything for a long moment. “They told us she left you,”

Herat said. “And you lost your mind and went after her.”

“You knew her, Herat,” Eyat said, and he just didn’t have the control

to keep his voice from shaking as he said it. His old comrades had all been told this, if Herat thought it. And had believed it. He shouldn’t care. But who would have told them this? “You knew us. And you believed that?”

Herat didn’t answer, and Eyat didn’t have the strength to ask again.
