yES ultimately I can only conclude that no one involved in this canon actually knew any more than I do, because what(A thing that should be incredibly basic but gives me headaches: service branches what now? 90% of what we see is using Navy terminology and then they just kind of… pepper the rest with Army-specific stuff with no particular distinction between them. Like supposedly Admiral is a rank that exists in the First Order but god help us if we ever see one because I will have so many questions.)But overall I’m so glad they just… explicitly dropped so much of the old canon, like we could have been looking at the kind of situation they have in the Marvel fandom with comics vs. MCU and that is just yikes. Star Wars was so close to becoming like pre-MCU comics in terms of literally dying under the bulk of its own canon and the only “fans” left being bitter aging gatekeepers–I just breathe a huge sigh of relief whenever I step back and think about what we have now, instead.(Ha ha and I never really thought of this but I guess a lot of people here now weren’t around when they officially announced the reboot? Let me just say it was an absolutely magnificent shitshow, like people were so angry you’d think Mickey Mouse was personally going to burn their SWEU books and then piss on the ashes while Goofy and Donald watched and cracked their knuckles threateningly. I’ve never seen such a marvelous display of utter pissbaby pointless tantrum-throwing outside of video games.)…
Ha ha I was around but not involved At All. And so I actually have a post I reblogged where I was like WAIT WHAT IS DISNEY DOING TO THE EUROPEAN UNION and let me tell you. Let me tell you. THE ASKS I GOT. So interesting. And incidentally, that was the very first time I’d even heard of the whole concept of E and U standing for anything but European and Union. So. It was fascinating. It was the most traffic I’d gotten on a Tumblr post to that date, I think. I was not entirely sure what an Ask was. But boy! I had a lot of really invested and helpful anons. (I may have had a moment where I had to ask what they meant by SW.)
I did for a hot minute actually think that the Disney corporation was getting overly involved in global politics. That was a wild moment.
I Googled for, like, a minute, because I got an ask (I’m working on it, ha, I’ll take any opportunity to rant) where someone was curious about why I thought Phasma should be a noncom, and I discovered that a) under the Empire there WAS a difference between the Army pilots (in-atmo) and the Navy pilots (space), until Suddenly There Wasn’t, and also– this is what floored me– apparently pilots did their own maintenance on their planes> WHAAAT that is not how it works???
But anyway. I mean, clearly, if you take this whole thing as a standard SF universe and just– assume that the whole thing is slightly-badly translated into English for the benefit of your audience, because of course Basic isn’t really just English– then you can kind of figure that sometimes words like Admiral and Lieutenant and Captain don’t quite translate, and so they’re all their own kind of thing. So you can just make it up, and if there are canon sources that contradict you, well, they’re probably not really all that well-thought-out so as long as you’re internally mostly-consistent you can kind of do what you want.
