Well, Tumblr broke the Xkit reply-to-replies functionality, so now there’s no way to do it properly. So this is the original post mentioning the sewing bird https://bomberqueen17.tumblr.com/post/629466168713003008/sewing-bird, and here are an assortment of messily-formatted pasted-in replies and responses and such, because I am determined to continue to use this as a blogging site even if it’s determined to not be usable as one, LOL. Also it’s a real good day to not think about current events so I’m going to do this instead.

They are often called a “third hand,” try

searching for that. They are used often in sewing kimono.

Yeah, there are a few things under “third hand” listings in various sites. None of them are that cute though!! Oh, I’m sure they’re used for kimono– anything with a lot of fine hand-sewing would certainly call for one.

I’m especially taken with this adorable little dragon/griffin number from Pinterest https://t.umblr.com/redirect?z=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.com%2Fpin%2F52072939417436430%2F&t=MjU5ZDIxYmFiNzRiZmFjYTA3ZTM5NWQxYmIzOWYxZTQyMGZhNGRjZixlUG1QbFltbQ%3D%3D&b=t%3AlJ1TF75W_ZYk8wof-yUZLA&p=https%3A%2F%2Fs-leary.tumblr.com%2Fpost%2F629519556412637184%2Fsewing-bird&m=1&ts=1600532806 : Hmm. C-clamps are a dime a dozen, and I do have access to a person with a CNC machine….

Oh man you could really make something cute!

A third hand! Oh that’s so sensible. Did you come

across this link? Apparently it’s affiliated with a museum lacis.com/catalog… https://lacis.com/catalog/data/AE_MiscellaneousSewingBird.html

I HAD NOT FOUND THAT! To say that site is not particularly search-engine friendly is to drastically understate things…

Lacis is a lace store in Berkeley. Absolutely legit

to order from even though their site looks about 20 years old.

Oh that’s news I can use! I have heard of them. I think they make some specialty stuff, themselves, because I’ve definitely seen Lacis-branded items, at least in online discussions.

The entire extent of my sewing ability is inexpertly

mending seams and buttonholes, but I love your flag. What did you dye the silk with?

Ahh, I used Dharma Trading Co’s acid dyes. Jacquard makes a line of acid dyes too, that are pretty widely available, but Dharma is amazing to order from and has never let me down in IDK, at least a decade. Great instructions on their site too, they know their stuff.

Fellow hand sewer here! If you could(please!) Help me

find a video of a sewing bird in action I may be able to make one(out of wood and not as pretty, but functional! I hope…) once I get my work bench fixed up this winter!

Oh, I have no idea where one would find a video, but it seems straightforward– a C-clamp base, and then one of those little jaw clips on the top, and literally whatever in between, the shitty ones on Amazon are just a grody string to connect them. I want something solid connecting them so it’s upright, but it could be pretty much anything. I might try making something from like, coathanger wire or something, if I can’t find a cute one.

a fellow hand-sewer!! if that silk wasn’t so fine and slippy

i’d suggest pinning it to a cushion for tension. as it stands, i will now be mooning over sewing birds

I do have some silk pins, though even with that I’m trying to keep any pinning to the seam allowance. I discovered that if I pin it to a bit of twill tape so that it’s held stable width-wise of the pin, that keeps it from slipping around, and then I can clamp that to the chair or whatever with my USB fan, and it’s better than nothing. I might improvise something by pinning it to my fabric Kindle case and putting something heavyish on that, for use at a desk with nowhere to clamp anything. We’ll see what I come up with.

I hope I didn’t miss anybody but it’s a real pain doing this without a legit way of doing it, this copy-pasting is kind of a drag, LOL.

It occured to me to wonder if anyone might be making relatively inexpensive modern reproductions of antique sewing birds, and I did find one:
