So Farmkid’s BFF comes over every Monday with her mom, and then her mom
does the books for the farm. FK and BFF run around together and mostly
self-entertain, though occasionally they come and require Attention.

After lunch, BFF’s Mom, who needs a good acronym (there are so many things
she could be named for, she’s really entertaining), took the two girls on a
walk up the creek bed to the waterfall.

They were gone for hours, actually, and Farmsister finally was like “… ok I
gotta go look for them” and on her way out the door, here they came. FK was
crying because she just that moment had gotten dirt in her eye, so the
first thing I heard was FS saying “Cry harder!” to her, but earnestly,
because yes, that’s the way to get dirt out of your eye, but I was like….
what

anyway.

as FK and FS were in the bathroom with saline solution and drama, BFF’s mom
was standing next to me, and suddenly reached into her swim shorts and
produced a fairly large rock. “What,” I said.

“I found some *cool rocks*,” she said, and proceeded to pull out like an
alarming amount of poundage of rocks of varying sizes out of her swimsuit,
which had no pockets. It was the most adorable and hilarious thing I have
ever seen a grown woman do. “Look at these cool rocks! … Okay they made a
rainbow when they were wet and now they are not nearly so striking, but
still.”

“Those are pretty great,” I said politely, still a little stunned by how
adorable the whole production had been.

“I’m going to take them home and put them in my *pond*,” she said, with an
astonishingly adorable air of smug satisfaction.

oh man but she's also the sort of lady whose instagram handle and email address include the name of her beloved cat, who died some years ago, and notably NOT her husband's name, about which he is really sanguine. (The cat had a human man's name, hence the confusion. And her husband was her high school sweetheart, he's not some newcomer. She calls him by his last name even though it's her last name now too, which has only intensified the confusion because there are definitely people who have known her a while who think her husband's name is the cat's.)
She collects the bones of animals to make decorative displays with them around her house. She also makes quilts, like arty ones. And she keeps pet snails, like wild ones she found-- she researches them and has had several alive in a tank for like, five years, and named them all and put Sharpie dots on their shells so she could be sure which was which. (It would be terrible to call a snail by the wrong name.)

And so on, and so forth. She helps us with flower arranging on Fridays in the summer so I'll probably call her something along the lines of FLower Lady but she is definitely the kind of character I could not make up if I tried.
