Oh man! That is a good question: Where have I found good videos of playthroughs of the Witcher video games?
Some of it, I’ve just seen people’s recs scrolling by here on Tumblr, and in the tags and such. A lot of them, people (mostly
akilah12902 I think!) have sent me scenes they think I’d particularly like. And some of them, I’ve known the name of the quest or enough keywords that I’ve known how to find it– I tend to browse through the various wikis to find keywords and character names and things, and look from there. But honestly I haven’t actually watched that many playthroughs!
But I’ll start you off with my favorites, from my YouTube history, because I haven’t watched that many. From these, the YouTube algorithm will surely give you way way too many additional suggestions, to your heart’s content. Probably all of this is game spoilers, so it’s behind the cut– but if you’re not gonna play the game, you might as well just watch these!
#1: Cracktastic: Roach Talks. Yes, it’s a quest you can only solve because Geralt gets high as fuck and can understand Roach when she talks. But it’s played so straight it only makes sense if you take it as read that Roach is actually talking and the shrooms are making Geralt able to understand it, rather than that he’s hallucinating the whole thing.
#2: Backstory: How Lambert Became A Witcher, with some insights into what life would’ve been like at Kaer Morhen.
#3: More Crack: Witchers Get Drunk: this is where we gain the knowledge that 1) Eskel has a) fucked a succubus b) while high on fisstech, and also that Lambert is super-duper into dressing up.
#4: Some Angst: Trial of the Grasses: there’s a bit where there’s a person under a curse and the only way to lift the curse, Yennefer decides, is to subject the person to the beginnings of the process used to transform youths into Witchers. Mostly, this is a study in the Witchers getting agitated because they’re reliving a bunch of their worst memories in witnessing this. Also, Yennefer gets vomited on and she makes Eskel wipe her down.
#5: Mega-Angst: Geralt Finds Ciri: this is, as far as I can tell, basically the climax of the game, where after having hunted for Ciri for months, Geralt finally finds her, and she appears to be dead. Start right at the 9 minute mark for just the juicy stuff. The body language is super good.
That’s mostly what I’ve got. I’m not super-invested in the gameplay in general, though I’ve been enjoying watching it while stuck in quarantine– it’s like getting out of the house, really– is that pathetic? no, I refuse to think so– but those were all entertaining snippets, I thought. And if you want more, the related links in the YouTube sidebar are probably plenty.
