i just witnessed a ritual
Chita cat is wandering around the back porch, where Dude has his office currently, meowing rustily and seeming discontented.
Dude has his expensive office chair from work set up at the table. He rotated to face her, and pressed the button to release the chair’s height hold, so the chair sank to its lowest setting with a hiss.
Chita watched this, then hopped up into his lap.
He turned back to face the table, and stood up slightly, holding her, to return the chair to its working height.
She climbed onto the table to reach the water cup we leave there for her. (Yes, our princess won’t drink water from a bowl on the floor, she has a people-style cup, though it’s hers and we don’t use it, that’s kept constantly filled on the table by the window so she can sit and look out and also drink.) (She also has a cup on the coffee table in the living room.)
Now she is tucked up behind his computer watching him, and is preparing to go curl herself into his lap.
“You know she’s weird about jumping,” he said defensively, when he noticed me watching all this in astonishment. “I let her up, she likes that.” (It’s true, Chita’s quite a good jumper as cats go, but doesn’t know that, and yells a lot before attempting even a lap-height jump.)
