Here is some random banter from chapter 9 that I cut because it was too long and also I couldn’t stop worrying about when Finn would get to wash his hands. Context: They are walking home from a victory party at which Finn gets tipsy for the first time in his life.
He had to pee. That managed to get a laugh out of Poe, who explained to him that in a place like this it was acceptable, especially after dark, to just pee in the bushes. “I’ll keep watch,” Poe said.
“Don’t leave,” Finn said, looking back hesitantly.
“I won’t,” Poe said. “I’ll be right here.”
“You’re not messing with me,” Finn said.
“I promise,” Poe said. “I’m not. I’ll be right here. I’ll talk the whole time. Hello, passers by, pay no attention to Finn peeing in the bushes like a normal person.”
“Shh,” Finn said, but he was laughing, so now he really had to pee. So he did, feeling weird about it the whole time. “I feel weird about this.”
“It’s really not weird,” Poe said.
“How do I wash my hands?” Finn asked in dismay, after he’d finished and put himself away again and was standing on the path staring at his hands in horror.
“Well,” Poe said, “you just wash them when you get a chance.”
“People do this all the time,” Finn said in horror, repeating something Poe had told him at the beginning of the conversation.
“Well,” Poe said.
“That means there are people all over this base all the time who have just peed and not washed their hands,” Finn said.
“And yet,” Poe said dryly, “life goes on and most of us have not yet died.”
“This is terrible,” Finn said.
Poe put his arm around Finn’s waist. “It’s really not,” he said, sounding really, really fond, and suddenly Arana’s prediction that sleeping with someone meant eventually losing them was at the forefront of Finn’s mind again.
