I love this piece and for some reason the way it lingered until each of them had turned off their separate cameras just made me cry, I don’t know why. What a time we live in.

Fun fact: the musical motif is a Shaker hymn, and everyone knows that, but not everyone knows that the Shakers were a communistic society based on complete gender equality, complete gender segregation, and ecstatic worship, and their hymns came to them in trances. They also believed in devoting their hands to work and their hearts to God, and in the doings of practical, useful things on the Earth, their spiritual homecoming in the afterlife would be assured.

The lyrics of the song are:

Tis a gift to be simple, ‘tis a gift to be free
‘Tis a gift to come down where we ought to be
and when we find ourselves in the place just right
‘Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gain’d
To bow and to bend we shan’t be ashamed
To turn, turn will be our delight
Till by turning and turning we come ‘round right.

(IDK why I had to infodump. My grandmother’s father owned a general store a couple of miles away from the first Shaker community, in Watervliet, and Grandma grew up knowing a lot of Shakers; in her later life, she wrote numerous books and was a leading expert on the lives of the Watervliet community, devoting herself to transcribing a large number of their records for other researchers to use.)

Anyhow. Keep yourselves sane, guys: be interested in stuff. And, IDK, cry at musicians.
