So… my whole life, occasionally when I am about to eat, or take a sip of something alcoholic or very tart, or bite something sour, I’ll suddenly get an excruciating shooting pain in my jaw. It was always just, like, a little spasm, never severe enough to do more than make me shiver or pucker. I rather thought it had something to do with salivation. (I clearly remember it from the first time I was ever given an alcoholic drink to sip, and I really thought everybody got shooting pains from booze and was like wow adults are wild, and then amazingly enough, kept going, so like, self-preservation not so much. And I still sometimes get it from that– oh I must try this exquisite Scotch or whatever, I take a sip and I’m like wow that tastes like pain, cool! it usually goes away in a second and might recur a couple of times but once the ice has melted a little it doesn’t happen anymore, so anyway, i don’t drink whiskey neat.)
Within the last year, though, this has intensified– not on many occasions, but once in a while I’ll go to open my mouth to eat and one side of my jaw is in ROCK SOLID SPASMS suddenly, which don’t go away unless I sit there gape-jawed and prodding at it in agony. It will die down after a couple of minutes, but after that the muscles from the outside are tender to touch.
Anyway yesterday I was aware that the muscles were sore on that side of my face, but it wasn’t until the evening when I had a long-anticipated ice cream sandwich in my hand that suddenly it all locked up and I couldn’t chew. I’m a stubborn bitch, so I managed to use my tongue and a couple of teeth on the other side of my mouth, but it sucked. All day all I’d wanted was ice cream, it’s almost the last we have of it in the house (we did not stock up), and I’m in agony.
Ibuprofen helps but my jaw is really sore and swollen today. I wish I knew what this was. I think it might be stress-related, which is dumb, but there it is. Sigh.
Anyway I’m mostly writing it down so I remember later, when someone’s like ‘oh has this ever happened before’ i can be like yes.
