cultural differences

So, my Dude works for a little technology company that over the summer got acquired in its entirety, swallowed whole, by a vast technology company, one of the S&P 500. I mean, huge company.
(The parent company’s HR department alone is three times the size of the entire staff of my dude’s company.)
Dude’s little company was always made up largely of remote workers. His branch has an office, and there are six who report there, and of those, two go in daily, and one comes in weekly, and the other three literally never come in.
This huge company has, of course, instituted their Pandemic Protocol. This included sending every branch, including the one above I just described, 6 boxes of 100 rubber gloves, a case of Clorox wipes, a number of posters on hand-washing, and such. Then, they instituted mandatory work from home orders.
So… Dude’s company has always been mostly made up of people working from home, as I mentioned, so none of this is new to them, though the mandatory part sucks for the three of them who were used to having an office to rattle around in. As a part of being remote, they all had pretty robust communication protocols, including of course a Slack channel entirely devoted to shitposting.
The parent company has a Microsoft Teams chat channel called “Remote Fun!” which was set up by Corporate as a fun! way for the remote workers! to bond! and socialize!
And it is such a sharp culture shock to go from their shitpost channel (for which i routinely send Dude things I find on Tumblr, The Dumbest Shit I’ve Seen On Tumblr This Week, so you know it’s like, gold-tier Shitposting) (the last one I sent might have been the Gimme The Yeet Boys comic) to then check in with Corporate’s Remote Fun! board where they’re like… lamenting how hard it is to adjust to not having access to the free office coffee and jokingly speculating that next the grocery store shelves will be bare of coffee.
It’s some whiplash, anyway.

Date: 2020-03-18 02:55 pm (UTC)When Tumblr banned porn, I joked about it with the coworker who sat next to me-- we both had accounts we were about to abandon.
We have Weeb Wednesdays! Where we watch two episodes of some random anime!
God, culture is so, so important.
