So I went in at 7 this morning, and before i even unlocked the door of my building I sprayed the door handle with bleach.

Let myself in, sprayed down the touchscreen. Clocked in.

Sprayed down the counters. Scrubbed and bleached the pens and the cup they live in by the register.

Went upstairs, absently spraying banisters and hard surfaces with bleach as I went. (not carpets, not wallpaper, but everything else.) I’m sure we haven’t been contaminated yet, but I’m starting with a clean slate.

Did as much work as I could before anyone else arrived. I had labels to print, packages to ship, invoices to print out and move, transactions to record, and used gear to take product photos of. nobody has to be there for that. I got a ton done.

Some coworkers arrived at 9. I spoke to them briefly, pointed out what I had sanitized and what I had not. Weighed in on the signage they wanted to put on our customer self-serve kiosks. (Wash hands before? Wash hands after? I recommended both, or use the wipes present at the counter to sanitize the touchscreen before use and then wash hands after. Some two-sided protocol that didn’t rely on the previous customer to have exercised good judgement.)

Manager said he wished he had the authority to furlough the one 65-year-old employee, who has vacation time he never takes and doesn’t get paid for. “Just go,” he said. “Just go! Just take two weeks and stay home and don’t come in!” He’s going to probably have to furlough less senior employees and if this guy would just take paid leave, he’d have one less worry, and if he’d do it now, while this hasn’t spread too badly– but he won’t.

Planned to wrap up and leave as my coworker arrived at 11:30, but he was a little early. “I’ve been isolating,” he said, “the only time I left my house was to pick up a pizza.”

… That’s. OK, it’s isolating, but.

Then he’s like “Oh my wife just texted me. There’s a confirmed case in her building.”

Reader, I freaked out, but silently. He’s sitting there eating at his desk. Now, he washed his hands as soon as he arrived, but he’s sitting there eating takeout, and I had touched his mouse and used his computer briefly, and he doesn’t know that I sanitized his desk afterward. I did, but he didn’t ask and I didn’t tell him because he was on the phone. I DO NOT HAVE FAITH IN HIS SELF-ISOLATION.

Anyway. I left as fast as I could, and when I got home, vented to Dude. “He CAME IN to tell you his wife’s building had a case???” “HE THINKS HE’S FINE.” “AUGHH” “AUGHH” and I washed my hands and stared in the mirror and said, well, I can’t travel now… can’t go to the farm… going to have to self-isolate and wait it out here… argh…

and then Dude looked it up and the guy in the M&T Building had been traveling, felt sick upon return, and hadn’t come in. Sheesh!

Sheesh. I texted my coworker that and he was like “good”. HUGE EYEROLL.

I’m going in tomorrow morning first thing to take care of the last couple of things but then I am not going to go back, I don’t think. They can pay someone else my hours, I’ll live skinny, spend a couple days here tidying and cleaning and cooking, and then head to the farm for possibly, the duration.

They can’t pay me, and I don’t want to be separated from Dude, but I don’t want to be stuck here, and I don’t trust my coworkers’ common sense, I just don’t.

I watched a cashier wearing disposable gloves touch her face 5 separate times while she checked me out yesterday. It’s so frustrating when you do know how to do a quarantine properly to watch the public absolutely fail. (All the food she touched got put away where it will sit for several days before we use it, and then I washed my hands again.)

I think you’re making a wise decision to go to the farm and do much more meaningful work for the next few weeks.

I think if you’re traveling straight to the farm, you won’t be stopped. There’s going to be a reall need for farm workers this year, so it’s legitimate travel to work, regardless of if they pay you
