Went out this morning to put my niece on the bus, Farmkid, as her parents were both up doing chores in the animal barn just up the hill. The farm dog, faithful hound Dini (a 12-year-old black lab mutt mix), doesn’t like to go in the barn because of the noise and her Anxieties, but likes to attend chores, because they often go for walks afterward, so she was sitting in the up-the-hill driveway staring at the door of the barn, as always.
Farmkid and I stepped off the sidewalk and into the driveway, and it was a sheet of ice, so both of us immediately slipped. I skidded sideways but kept my feet, and Farmkid, well, she just went whoop straight down on her butt. That doesn’t hurt as much when you weigh 50 pounds, so she was unfazed, but I heard an urgent woof and Dini came galloping down the hill to us.
“Why is she barking at us?” Farmkid asked. Dini made a beeline straight for Farmkid, and I realized that she’d seen her kid fall and was worried.
So I made much of her, and she came and guarded us while we played in the snow waiting for the bus.
