hm that’s a novella alright

so i think i just finished a novella of 19,000 words, ish, and it needs a little editing but
it’s a weird mix of infodumps and throw-you-in-the-deep-end unexplained shit because I wrote it about a world I’ve mentally occupied for over a decade, and i thought it would give me some distance but IDK.
It’s a self-contained story told entirely from one character’s point of view. It’s got some setup for the Huge Novel dragging behind it, but it’s not just a teaser. And i think it’s got a good sort of resonance to it, thematically– part of it being, the POV character reflects on how he always gets erased from retellings of stories because he’s in the shadow of this other character, and in the novel he’s a supporting character whose POV we never get and who often gets erased by how prominent the main character is. So I’m pleased with that.
But I don’t really know what to do with this thing. And I genuinely can’t tell if it stands on its own. But it was nice to get unblocked, a bit. I guess I should let it sit a couple days and then try to actually read it, see if I left anything out.
