dragonlady7: self-portrait but it's mostly the DSLR in my hands in the mirror (Default)

We’re up to the fourth episode of the Witcher. I’ve been hand-sewing myself a new dress, to pass the time. It’s working nicely.
So here’s the thing. I’m enjoying it, but parts of it I’m just sort of sitting there grimacing waiting for something else gory to happen. I didn’t think I was squeamish, but– it’s the casual brutality, I think, that gets me, in this show and basically every other movie or TV show i’ve watched with gore in it.
And it’s not that I don’t, like, get why it’s there. I’m not objecting to it. I just sort of don’t enjoy it.
What my real conclusion is, is that I get why they have the whole complicated plots everywhere, that’s the point of the thing and it’s fine and all, but what I actually would like to watch is just a supercut of only the scenes Geralt’s in.

And I was mulling this over, a little surprised at myself, and then I realized that no, it’s not even that I think Henry Cavill’s hot or anything (I mean, he’s fine, he’s clearly worked very hard on that whole, y’know, situation that is him, and congrats to him really) but it’s more that I like the personality, the lip curls and head tilts and such, the sarcasm and the wounded honesty and the ridiculousness of him; I am not particularly invested in the biceps which are clearly The Thing I’m meant to be into.

But really– it’s the dynamic. Even in the action scenes with Geralt, there’s a wryness to him and to the tone of the whole piece. He’s funny. Despite being a Video Game Action Hero With Two Swords And Unkillable Swagger, he’s hashtag-relatable.

It’s not that the other characters aren’t ever relatable– Queen Calanthe gets to have a lot of real emotions, and most of them are more or less understandable– but for example Ciri’s entire story is so horrible, and her a child, so there’s really no room to cram in the slightest bit of levity or humor. Nothing against the actress, and honestly I fail to see how it’d be possible, but Christ is it terrifying and awful.
And so far, Yennefer’s story is, well, I get it, i get her, she’s a good character, I don’t like it. She really doesn’t get to be funny, not at all the way Geralt is. She’s got some bitter humor but it’s not the same as being wry. It’s fine, i get why it has to be there, but:

I just want to watch a supercut of Geralt dumbassing his way through the world with good intentions, terrible timing, a bunch of swords, and lots of anguished micro-expressions, completely misplaced trust, falling-for-the-same-old-shit flabbergastedness, cynicism he’s not super great at, plausibly-deniable mercenariness, taciturn grunting, running away whenever someone asks him about feelings, and so on. Incidentally that’s finally come up in this third episode, the legend that witchers’ mutation process burns out all their emotions, and it’s like, so incredibly obvious from the first instant you see this guy that while he doesn’t have a ton of facial expressions he’s willing to let on about, he is incredibly emotional all the goddamn time and it’s hilarious because he believes it too, he thinks he isn’t, and is completely deluded. Not caring if you die is not the same as not being a sentimental wreck about basically everything else, buddy.

So I feel like for sure once I’ve watched the whole thing, that’s what I want to find: someone make me a supercut of that, and forget the rest of the backstory. I don’t want to watch women getting stabbed a lot in hopeless battles, don’t want to watch complicated non-heroic people make difficult decisions that get a lot of people hurt or killed, and so on.

I’d be most delighted if the whole thing just became a mostly light-hearted caper where Geralt pretended to roll his eyes at Jaskier while being secretly charmed the whole time, but I mean, I’m not new, I know that’s what fanfiction is for.

And as a side note, IDK anything about anything, I don’t really watch TV or shows or movies or whatever very much, but I must say, Mister Henry Cavill is working extremely hard in this show, and it sort of shows through in every bit of it, where he’s just– he’s like, giving a lot, you know? Putting in Oscar-contender levels of effort and taking it Extremely Seriously. I applaud his workmanship. Is he always like this? Have I been missing out by not watching all the other shit he’s been in? It all seemed terrible, but like, this is objectively terrible and I like it a lot, so…
