We went to basically the only tourist attraction open in the Westfjords in January, which was the witchcraft museum. It’s attached to a lovely little cafe. It’s an eccentric little museum, entirely in Icelandic but with a guidebook that gives you the gist of the labels. It was more about witch-hunts as social phenomenon than about real supernatural phenomena, but as such was probably more interesting than something sensationalized would have been. My favorite display was the “invisible boy”, which naturally I couldn’t get a photo of– the case was apparently empty except for the spell of invisibility carved onto a stone hovering at about hand-height. Icelandic witchcraft is similar to other folk practices but relies much more heavily upon engraved symbols with detailed meanings. I was fascinated, and found the humor entertaining.
I’ve just got a few more photos I’m going to put up on the grid like this, but I did put a huge quantity of them up on my Flickr page. Link in bio, album is easy enough to find from there. Some of it’s captioned but Flickr doesn’t display those by default. (at Museum Of Witchcraft And Sorcery Hólmavík)
