Sunrise in the mountain pass as we head toward Holmavík. Photo by
zobar2 out the moving car window. The sun sent this ray straight up for a good 10, 20 minutes as we drove and it was so bizarre.
I hadn’t seen the sun directly in so long that I actually said “if it comes all the way up I might lose my mind,” and stared at it like a fool when I wasn’t hyperfocusing on the orange poles to make sure I didn’t slide off the road.
It was right about noon, for the record.
Only a tiny bit of Iceland (one town? I forget, Google would tell you right away) is above the Arctic circle; the rest of it still has sunrises even in the dead of winter, but some towns like Ísafjördur are in the shadow of mountains the sun never gets above, so while there’s light in the sky, there’s never direct sunshine.
So think about that, and be glad we’re well into January now and all that’s fading behind us.
(Unless you’re in the southern hemisphere. Lol sorry.)
