This is sunrise (11am) in Heydalur, the resort/guesthouse/converted dairy farm where we were staying. We arrived just after dark (4pm) from Ísafjördur the day before. It’s a wonderful place, with a hot spring that feeds an outdoor stone-lined “hot pot”, and an indoor swimming pool that’s the heatsink to keep a greenhouse above freezing year-round, where they can grow much of their produce. The place is run by a couple from Reykjavik, who bought it as an abandoned dairy farm in 2000 and have been steadily improving it ever since. In the summer there’s camping and horse treks, but mostly we were there for the hotpot and scenery.
There were a number of animals there. The dog in this picture is Loki, who begged us to throw him snowballs. There were also horses, who were unimpressed with us, another enormous teddy bear of a dog, several cats, and a talking parrot.
Currently, as I write this, the roads are closed all around the Westfjords, and there have been avalanches with massive property damage but so far no fatalities along one of the northernmost fjords. I hope everyone is all right! I know it’s not their first rodeo.
Btw I took this picture, it’s one of the few I did with my real camera. ☺️
