So… Flights out of isafjördur all cancelled today. No big, we can fly tomorrow! Ehmmmmm… Worse weather tomorrow. The proprietess of Heydalur told us to get out while we could, and get as far toward Reykjavik by car as possible before we hit closed roads. So we did, going back over yesterday’s familiar road in whiteout conditions, then continuing over another mountain pass in even worse whiteout conditions, and we were feeling good when we passed the first place she’d told us we might have to stop. (The blow by blow is in my Stories.)
But then the wind picked up. The airports aren’t closed for snow, sillies, they’re closed for the gales, which are formidable. I thought I knew about wind, but oh no. This was like a giant pushing your car. The water was blowing in drifts across the road. It was unreal.
The road was closed just south of Búrdardalur, so we turned back and had to stop at the grocery store to ask the clerk if there was a hotel. She pointed us to a guesthouse and we’re safe there now, the sun going down. We’ve got three hours of driving to do before 4pm tomorrow, provided the roads reopen, which they’re expected to.
This has been an extra bit of adventure, and we’ve seen some great things, but I am really tired– Dave forgot his license so I’ve had to do all the driving, which might actually be harder on him than me. It’s been a lot! (at Búðardalur)
