kids at christmas

as we were preparing to leave Dude was like “wait how many kids are going to be at Christmas?” and I contemplated it for a long moment, and finally said, “One,” so.
yeah, farmkid is it, and boy oh boy is she going to have a good time.
I spent a lot of years with huge family holiday celebrations including 0 children, and it can be fun actually to still have the high-key Christmas Traditions etc with zero kids to actually require them– oh, the years when Farmsister, increasingly aged, kept having to still be the baby and do the little kid thing, write the letter to santa and such, and she’s like guys i’ve graduated college this is a lot and we all (three to five to seven years her senior) were like Nope This Is Important You’re The Baby, and it was unceasingly hilarious.
Farmkid, about to be 6, has been already given a kind of talk by her staunch atheist mother, about how Santa isn’t… a person, per se, or even a singular entity really, but rather more of an idea, and so on, so. Our family was always kind of chill about the Concept of Santa; us older kids figured it out and then had to pretend for the sake of the littles, and the littles were like “we know what’s up but it would break our sisters’/parents’ heart if we didn’t play along so for the sake of the game we’ll pretend” and as far as i know it was just always like that. So… IDK what “Santa” is actually going to get credit for this year but it’s none of my business, lol.
anyway it’s all on her, she’s got to be enough kid for all of us. i think, somehow, she’ll manage.
you’d think, by the way, she’d be a terrible brat, to so often be the center of attention as she is– an only child, effectively, in such a large family, with aunts and grandparents like a deck of cards to choose from who will indulge her whims this time– but somehow for the most part she’s not awful about it! She just has this sort of… glossy wholeness to her, that she’s got access to all this attention when she wants, and largely doesn’t abuse it. It’s kind of nice. (I know this is very much middle-child of a large family of me, to assume that any only child is going to be horrible, but listen, some of us had to share our middle-child syndrome ok???)
So I’m sure she can carry this whole thing for all of us, largely because we all spent a good number of years amusing ourselves by making her mother carry it all, so.
now i’m just rambling because she’s sleeping in and nobody has come to take my computer away from me, lol. (i expect she’ll install herself in my lap and make me read to her. we’ve wrapped around and are rereading the beginning of the Cloud Roads and last night it was lights out just at the first appearance of Chime, her very favorite.)
