I’m writing affirmation postcards for my bestie and her kids. Her daughter, who is five, has anxiety issues already, and my BFF hit on the idea of doing something that used to help her when she was young, which was designating a little spot on her wall to be the Wall Of Love and putting up every thank-you note she’d ever received there, writing notecards containing every bit of praise anyone had ever given her, and all that sort of stuff, to prove to herself that her brain was lying and that she was a person who was valued and had a place in the world.
(This has prompted her to recreate that for herself, as well, because clearly, she could still use it.)
So I’m writing them postcards, and figured I’d better send one to her son too, who is a sweet and sensitive boy and probably is feeling neglected by the attention she’s paying to the girl, who’s having trouble adjusting to school.
It seems like a really good approach, to me, and I’d add on a calendar with upcoming events to let the child prepare herself for them, because she’s had real issues all her life with change and not wanting things to be different, and I feel like if she had time to prepare herself for new things she’d have less, perhaps, to worry about.
Anyhow. I wish I had time to hang out, we could make a decorated corkboard probably.
I’m thinking of sending one to her husband too but I don’t know what to write on it. I never get his side of the story but he’s shockingly inconsiderate, filtered through my BFF’s impressions, but I doubt sending him a postcard telling him to pay more attention to them is going to help. So I won’t.
