So the imaginations of various people have been running wild about building a tiny house to replace the yurt, and that’s fine.
BIL pointed out that he has need of building some kind of shack out in that area to hold the maple sugaring equipment. he recently picked up an evaporator, which needs serious work, but he does clearly intend to use it and do some more sugaring stuff. having a shed for that use would help.
I had pointed out that if there was a building being constructed out there, which may or may not have some infrastructure to it, it could be dual-purposed to incorporate a facility for the people living in the cabin to use as a bathing place. like, as it is the apprentices have to hike in to the farmhouse to use the shower in the bathroom that is 1) the only bathroom for VM’s apartment, 2) the only bathroom on the main floor of the farmhouse, 3) the laundry room for both the house and the apartment, AND 4) the hallway that connects the house to the apartment. Seriously it’s a terribly-designed room and it is always a hassle to share it among so many people. So having the shower be in another building, closer to the cabin, would be fantastic. Having the shed somehow host the whole bathroom– a composting toilet, then showers and maybe a washing machine with a gray-water disposal system because there’s definitely not room for a sceptic system out there– would be ideal, and more convenient for the cabin-dwellers.
but this morning as i was mostly asleep lying in bed i had the thought that a sugar shack could, during the rest of the year, do double duty as a dye shed. like, somewhere to process natural and chemical dyes. And maybe somewhere to wash wool, if we get some sheep? and oh somewhere I could set up that fucking loom Mom’s now hassling me to get out of her house. Also somewhere to store the flax-processing equipment, and a place to actually do the work, too.
And I’d discussed briefly with VM that if we built a building on that flat bit of land, we could upgrade the landscaping– I have a tiny little neglected flower garden out in front of the yurt that’s been getting steadily cuter over the last three years, but we could move some perennial stuff over there, especially if we judiciously replace the dying box elder and other sort of junky trees (there’s a lot of sumac) with nicer, small trees (hazelnuts? fruit trees? whatever) and plants. And it struck me that that’s a good place to centrally-locate all the dye plants I’ve got sort of stuck around in various places now. VM has a real interest in dyes, his degree is actually in art and he worked for an art supply store for a while right out of college. I think he’d quite enjoy having a dye garden and a little workshop area.
So I have to collect my thoughts on that. There may not wind up being room for me to have a tiny house in any of this after all, but honestly I’ll figure it out. Whatever! Give me a dye shed and some room to work on fiber and textile stuff!!
