their writing: the dawn breaks and you are anew. the person you once were vanished. the rising sun offers a fire to burn her to ashes.
me: hey there- i just wanted to you to know your work is amazing. i love reading your writing. please continue! it is so eloquent. your wording and command of the english language are just incredible. you show such a deep emotional intelligence.
them: lol ya i do a write sometimes thnx bb [gif of the rock]
where’s that post about how seeing a fic is like seeing a writer defending their dissertation and interacting with the same writer on tumblr is like finding them eating mayonnaise in their kitchen in the middle of the night because interacting with writers in the comments of a fic is like talking to someone coming down off a three-day finals coffee binge because that’s pretty much exactly what’s happening.

yeah but like
how fuckin weirded out would you be if you left a comment and the author was like
the wind moves through the prairie the way your beautiful comment moves through me, my emotions are stirred like the deep-rooted prairie grasses, drawing nutrients from subsoil, drawing sustenance from the sun, the sun of your approbation
or some poetic bullshit. like. it’s a comment. it’s a comment! it would be fucking weird if they spent four days brainstorming, outlining, writing, and editing their reply to you when you were like “wowie zowie i like this story”. like… no! the appropriate answer for that is “thnx means a lot from u!” or somesuch!
Like sure, I wrote a 100,000-word story a year ago and you just left a very sweet nice gushy comment on it and I could like, format an essay in response, but like, why, I mean I will if the comment was super deep or something or asked a question that was kind of existential, maybe? but I’m a lot more likely to have an off-the-cuff response because the story’s done and I said what I needed to say within the work itself, and there’s really no call to like, expound in the comments section?
I’m gonna say “thanks man” or like, “big mood” and no punctuation and move on and work on the next story I’m writing, or maybe recover from this one.
I get that it’s funny but it’s also like. Man you already got dazzled, and I said what I said, me dazzling you again is like gilding the lily and also would come across as kind of creepy honestly. Like I’m just here to flex rather than any kind of genuine social engagement.
YMMV but like. That’s my take.
