[image description: a tweet by [profile] mikedubsradio: “I feel bad for kids nowadays, they just get to see if school is closed on the Internet. They’ll never have the excitement of waiting to see your school scroll across the bottom of the tv screen like it’s the NFL Draft.”]

We never watched TV in the mornings so I didn’t know they had school closings on there until I saw it fairly recently. We listened to the radio– specifically, to an AM radio station so old it only had three letters in the call sign. And they wouldn’t constantly announce the school closings, they’d read them out every five to ten minutes or so, and in their entirety, of course.

So on a snowy morning we’d come down and sit in the kitchen where Mom was already listening to the radio as she made breakfast, and we’d sit through all this boring talking, and then Don Weeks would start reading off the school closings and we’d have to wait in alphabetical order.

I’d mostly forgotten about it until the other day I was talking to a new acquaintance and it turned out they’d gone to the school that came just after ours in the alphabet, and i had like, a full-body fight-or-flight response to hearing the name of the school because it always fucking closed and if you heard its name then there was no more hope except you could keep listening and in ten minutes when they read the same list again maybe they’d add yours by then, so you would and then there it would be again goddamn Ichabod Crane and it was extra torture because our school was two words and there was another school with the same first word and it closed more than we did too, so you’d hear hoosick* and get all excited and then they’d say falls and you’d be like AHHHH and then they’d say ichabod and you were cast into the pits of despair.

(This is specifically an elementary school memory, because by junior high my mom worked for the school and so would get a call on the phone tree before the radio station got it. My younger sisters don’t remember this, but I do. By high school we’d probably have been watching on TV.)

So I hollered at this guy your school was always fucking closed on snow days! and he, understandably, was like what the fuck, but how do you explain this? Anyway I will resent them to my dying day for no reason whatsoever. And I maintain, they closed way more than we did.
