I’m 40 this morning, and my hair is not suddenly gray and my aches and pains have not suddenly intensified so I guess it’s okay. :)
I’ve been reading the October Daye books, at BFF’s insistence, and they did suck me in pretty well, and there’s a pretty main-tier character who is a shapeshifting cat, so this morning as my cat, who I have sorely missed this last week and a half of traveling, was being ridiculous I was thinking about how realistic a shapeshifting cat should be. I think McGuire is pretty demonstrably a cat person, and her cat-based characters are reasonably realistic, but as I watched my cat sitting on top of the back porch minifridge warbling in distress and then starting to heave because she’d eaten grass and needed to puke, I tried to imagine Tybalt the King of Cats doing the same, and it was unaccountably hilarious. A smug, lithe man in leather pants suddenly shifting down to a burly striped tabby tomcat so that he could hup-hup-hup gack a wad of chewed-up grass wetly onto the floor is a thoroughly diverting image.
Also, clearly there’s some source text lore that everyone who writes fantasy novels based on the concept of Big Bad Mean Faerie is using, because a ton of the same concepts keep popping up in the Daye books as did in the Element of Fire. I don’t know what the source text is, though. I ought to care and don’t, alas.
It did make me wonder if anybody’s written fic where Kade Carrion and Thomas Boniface cross over into October Daye’s ‘verse.

Date: 2019-08-26 02:52 pm (UTC)Also, I think it’s the cabdriver who helps Toby out sometimes who says it, but there’s a line in one of the books where a character turns to Tybalt and goes “Don’t cats lick their own behinds?” Which Tybalt 100% does not respond to, but always makes me laugh when I think about it.

Date: 2019-08-27 01:09 am (UTC)I get that Tybalt is supposed to be like, The Ideal Man, and i was rooting for them to get together, and I do like cats, but I don't like smugness and I don't really like leather pants and I am sad that he falls a tiny bit flat for me because of that. Also exactly come on there has been zero accountability about cats licking their own nethers, i get she doesn't work that blue but for real, you can't not think about this when you think about a cat.
