You know what, I’m gonna say it.
Crowley and Aziraphale being asexual in cannon and them having and enjoying sex are not conflicting ideas. There are sex-positive and sex-neutral asexuals. These are characters who do not need to eat, or listen to music, or indulge in anything related to human forms of pleasure, but do so anyway because they like the way it makes them feel. Theres literally zero reason why sex can’t be one of those pleasures, even without sexual attraction (because sexual attraction does not equal sex drive or even enjoyment of the act).
I’ve seen a lot of posts (hell, I’ve even reblogged some of them) about choosing between headcannoning Crowley and Aziraphale as asexual or headcannoning them as sexually active, but you know what? Theres literally no need to choose. They can be both at the same time.
Headcannon whatever you like, but as an asexual who’s been made to feel guilty for even liking to read/write smut fic (because “real” asexuals must eschew anything sexual, according to some people), I’m done feeling like I have to choose with these characters. They can be ace, they can be sexually active, they can be both at the same time if I want and those are equally valid interpretations.

Date: 2019-07-17 01:22 pm (UTC)I'm just-- having trouble writing the thing because I want an ace fic but I do want it to have sex in it (just like that one!!), and I'm horribly twisted up in a kind of impostor syndrome, because I'm fine claiming the ace spectrum in general, but as a demisexual person who has a fair amount of sex, I'm also uncomfortably aware that my experience is very much tilted to one side of the spectrum and I don't want to claim the whole spectrum in a way that might make outsiders take me as typical and think the rest is -- less valid, somehow-- and yet I also want to write about my experiences because that's what I know, and it's-- well anyway. It's mostly manifesting in Crowley, the ace-spec character in this fic, uncomfortably and indecisively squirming about things. Because, of course, he's kind of a low-self-esteem sort of disaster of a being, and there's no way he's going to have grown-up words and the confidence to articulate his needs and set boundaries.
I am loving how prevalent it has become in the fandom to think of Crowley as the more sexually inexperienced of the two. I get that that's pretty much canon, but a lot of things get subsumed to the sheer weight of fanon and I'm amused that hasn't.
(Of course Aziraphale, the sensualist who loves food and dancing at exclusive gay clubs, also has tried sex extensively! Of course Crowley, who has been pining for six thousand years, gets other people to do the sex-sins for him! I love this, and also I love that some of our venerable bookverse titans of old school fandom are writing him in snake orgies because fandom is best as a rainbow although honestly that doesn't contradict any of the above really at all.)

Date: 2019-07-17 02:02 pm (UTC)As another demisexual person who has sex often enough to feel weird about talking about Ace Issues sometimes, yeah, I hear that. I think that there's enough of a range of ace-ness that it's a good and valuable thing to write whatever kind of ace-spec characters you want, and other folk can pick and choose what they want to read.
I know! I also enjoy how much folk are like 'Yeah Aziraphale's a top', because it's a delightful inversion of how fandom usually takes characters. All in all it's very pleasing to see the fic coming out of the fandom right now. :)
oh wow that snake orgies fic, that is hilarious, thank you so much for linking it.

Because as an ace with a sex drive (marginal, but it exists) who reads smut but still doesn't experience sexual attraction, YES.
More of This Sort Of Thing, fandom. Even when you aren't my own fandom.
