dragonlady7: self-portrait but it's mostly the DSLR in my hands in the mirror (Default)

I finally got all my photos downloaded from various devices and then uploaded to Flickr. I've decided I need to upload cellphone photos alongside real camera photos because otherwise they don't wind up together and then I can't find the one I'm thinking of, later. Anyhow--
Here's the whole album, but there are no captions. (Maybe I'll add those at some point?)
So here's some selected highlights and commentary. We'll see how much i've got time to really write about it, lol; am back at the office job and do have to do actual work sometime...

An experiment: Here's a video I took near sunrise from the dock of our cabin, because I liked how the clouds were moving and how quiet it was. I don't know how well videos embed, so we'll see!

Sitting on the "al fresco dining area" on the porch, my short-haired Dude and the citronella-burning tiki torch that the mosquitoes laughed at.

The still photo version of the video above; I was down on the dock around 6am, watching the loons do their loon business all around, and thought the clouds were really dramatic.

One of the days, it was quite chilly, which was nice because bundling up meant the mosquitoes couldn't bite. i was glad I'd brought some wool socks and legwarmers.

Our phones could only intermittently connect, and only from the end of the dock. We wound up using the coffee table thing made out of a tree stump as "the Internet stump" where we'd leave our phones sitting to see if they could send or receive messages.

View backward from the dock toward the cabin, showing the canoe included with the rental. The canoe was the only way we could get to our car and the rest of the world; it was a half-hour paddle to the dock where our car was parked.

Another dramatic sunrise from the dock, this one dramatically and deliberately underexposed for effect:

Lest you think we just sat on the dock the whole time, we did not: here is Dude standing at the head of a trail we hiked, up St. Regis Mountain. We'd had to canoe to the trail head, and then we got lost instantly after this picture, but we did eventually find our way.
DSC_8818

This is some great scenery while we were lost. See, we were trying to climb St. Regis Mtn, and this is Upper Spectacle Pond, which is near the mountain, but is not the mountain, and so we turned around and went back and retraced our steps and discovered that yes, we'd followed the wrong trail basically instantly after getting out of the canoe. So-- not really a regret, but uh, it was real buggy and I almost died of mosquito exsanguination taking this photo, so.

A bit later, as we were definitely going up a mountain; I had to give Dude my bandana, having forgotten the other one I had meant to bring for him. I apologized that it was pink but he said "don't be so heteronormative" and soaked it in Deet before putting it on.

We had not packed quite enough water for our hike and we got really bug-bit and sweaty, so we were really really glad to see our canoe again at the end of the hike. Here it is waiting by the trail head...

That night I sat down on the dock, since it was the first reasonably clear night, and I took star pictures. In this one, you can see an airplane that went by blinking during my 30-second exposure.

DSC_8879

This is a straight-up view of the stars from the dock, a little more pristine, sans airplane and the lights of the other camps on the lake. The lake was absolutely chock-a-block with great camps; I think ours was the only small cabin. Everything else was for parties of a dozen or more. Huge fancy boathouses, and such.
DSC_8890

On July 4, not one but two of the great camps had fireworks displays. This one was directly across from our dock, so I took this photo just sitting on my dock.

We did have a couple of little campfires so we could roast marshmallows, so here's a video, if embedded videos work:

And a final video: this is as our hosts picked us up in a motorboat to return us and all our baggage to the dock, so we could go home. Bye-bye!

The videos just take me to Flickr to watch them, rather than being embedded, but the lake video is so lovely and restful. And the star photos are super cool! I'm glad you did not get entirely devoured by mosquitoes.

Those are all really lovely photos and I am somewhat jealous of your vacation in a cabin far away from electronics. (I am realizing I have a problem with wanting to be connected always.)

Lovely pics! And your Dude's new haircut is most excellent, btw. :)
