In light of what I now know about Guatamala, if I wrote Kes’s backstory as being influenced by the Mayans, it would make the angst of what happened to Poe in my au 1000x more magnificently painful.
Kes would be all like, first my people were conquered by a larger galactic power and the Old Republic did fuck all to stop them
Then the Empire swept in and made it 100x worse, with their xenophobic cultural uniformity policies
Then my son is literally stolen from me by an outgrowth of that Empire and stripped of any chance to grow up with his own people or like, you know, a normal healthy human being excuse me if looking upon the depressed and deeply traumatized face of my only child makes me want to go back inside and weep bitter bitter tears of what is wrong with this galaxy.
… I mean, actually the implications of it would be deeply, deeply grim if I did parallel it even loosely to Guatamala, but this whole fic kind of ended up going places I didn’t expect so.
I love where that idea goes, and of course I don’t own the idea, and am pleased to have inspired another idea.
I will absolutely share you all I have so far, just to see if you like any of my particular takes on it, but I just figured I’d add in here– I saw this on my phone as I was on my way out to hang up laundry, so as I was hanging out the laundry I was articulating a couple things to myself, so here they are.
Your version is extra-poignant because Poe was stolen. My version, Kes’s anger has nowhere to go but against Poe, because Poe <i>stole himself</i>. As a young child he was so influenced by the proximity of the Organas that he felt pulled by duty to join the Academy and take himself away, and Kes can’t understand. He joined the Rebellion but not because he wanted a Republic, and he’s even more disgusted by the New Republic, and he doesn’t understand why Poe feels any kind of pull of duty at all to this latest in the succession of administrations that have existed expressly to screw over anyone but themselves.
Which is why he’s <i>so</i> bitter when Poe joins the Resistance.
I will drop you a line with more stuff though. I just wanted to say this quickly-ish. :)
