I drove back from my sister’s farm on Wednesday night and planned to do many many things yesterday but instead I just did jack and shit. Although, I also, I *think*, finished the Goblin Emperor fic. I think!

(I was also relentlessly slow-mo pursued around my house by the cat, who was attempting to convince me that her skin-dad, who was home the whole time I was gone, never ever pets her. So I spent a lot of time under a cat and unable to get up and move. Flimsy excuse, but excuse nonetheless.)

(At the farm, BIL was like, “so when are you gonna take off on your literary career” and I explained to him that authors don’t make money, so. I spend all my time that’s not at the farm working at my minimum-wage job so that I have money at all. But! My car will be paid off next month, maybe I can justify even fewer hours and carve out some writing time! We’ll see. Sigh.)

So I have a dilemma, in that the story needs to be beta’d for Goblin Emperor-isms, and I straight-up cannot find what the fucking emperor’s crown is called, it’s a twelve-letter E word with “Mura” afterward and literally none of you fuckers has written it down anywhere and I don’t have the fucking book, so. 

I don’t think I have the time or patience to really find a beta, though, so I think it’s just going to get posted at some point the next time I have time. But if someone could tell me how to spell the “Ethuasdfasdfasdf;ed Mura” properly I’d be most pleased. No, it’s not in that fanmade glossary; it’s mentioned, but not by name. Thanks!

I guess I could rewrite the line so it’s not mentioned. Everything else, I’ve been able to reconstruct without the book, but that one thing, I don’t know what the fuck it’s called. 

I love this book, but there are a number of rules I’ve made myself about writing fantasy settings, which this book breaks, and instead of convincing me those rules are wrong, they’ve just strengthened my commitment– it’s good <i>in spite of</i> those rules being broken, not because of. Fight me.

Side question, to the broader Tumblr audience (I’ve already asked this on DW): where you live, does it cost money to request books from your library? It costs me twenty-five cents to put a book on hold, or a dollar if I don’t pick it up, and I guess it’s worth that so I don’t have to drive around between the branch libraries looking for the thing I’m in search of, but it’s a little strange to me, I don’t remember it being like that at the library where I grew up. Just wondering!

Who is the goblin captain and what is the unit of goblin military the Great Avar left behind called??? I have just been sort of indirectly referring to them because I can't remember the names. Please thank you!

The Avar arrives with "a full sixteen-man eshpekh of the Hezhethoreise Guard", and leaves behind him a half-eshpekh, presumably 8 men, under Captain Vizhenka, whose wife Nadeian is Maia's aunt. (I loved the goblins, they're far more down-to-earth than the elven court, and they have wicked wry senses of humor).

I've never heard of a library charging for interlibrary loan before BUT budgets for public libraries have been falling drastically so perhaps they had to institute it to be able to do it.

Erie Co. went thru some Bad Shit a couple years back, so maybe that's it. I guess I should support them and give them quarters a lot, better that than piracy or supporting Amazon's cut of the profits in buying a zillion books, not that buying books is ever bad...

I should write a post about that, now that I think of it. I mean, rule 1, don't give everyone unpronounceable names that nobody can remember, is the one I'm thinking of, lol.

I can let a comma go, but it's a hard sell to get me to deal with it.
I wrote up a whole essay but posted it private because I didn't have time to edit, which struck me as all very hilarious when it's supposed to be about what a good writer I am, lol.

I've occasionally been in library systems that charged a fee (or reserved the right to charge one) for ILL from outside the system, but not for moving things around between branches. Philadelphia mostly made up for lack of funding by having limited evening and weekend hours-- I'm happy they've expanded those again. And out here in the burbs it's the height of luxury to have Sunday hours.

2 of the ?6 library systems I’ve used as an adult charged for inter library loans and holds, one public and one university affiliated. One other charged for hot new releases to jump the reservation queue (they’d buy 20 copies of Harry Potter type demand releases, keep 4 for regular use with free reserves but it could be months waiting, and rent the rest for a dollar a week until demand went down).

I’ve just got a copy of the goblin emperor to read so I can enjoy your fic (which I’ve haphazardly read part of out of order and then realized I was interested enough to invest time to read the book).

My city's library system doesn't charge for ILL, but it's a big city with like 25 branches and also Someone figured it was a great idea to only ever buy one copy of any given book for the entire city. So roughly half of my book searches result in (eventually) putting a hold on the book so it can come in from another branch, after the earlier 12 people who reserved it get their shot. (I love my city but I don't love this policy of tiny numbers of copies.)

However I've found as an adult that unless I actually work at the library and can thus renew my stuff INFINITY times, I am incapable of returning anything on time and thus have a permanent fine, which I figure is my extra tithe and is only right and proper.
