Photo Post: Buffalo Beauts

So for my last photo post of 2018 here's my most recent shots. I dug out my trusty old Nikon D7100 DSLR and shoved it in my purse with the banged-up old Tamron 18-270 all-in-one I bring everywhere, and shoved my newest acquisition (summer sometime, traded in), a well-used Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 macro lens, and toddled on down to HarborCenter downtown, to take in an NWHL match there.

It was the Buffalo Beauts vs. the Minnesota Whitecaps, and they'd played the previous evening at the KeyBank Arena-- which is the Sabres' venue, and we decided to give that game a pass since there would be a Sabres game afterward and so the traffic would be awful. Downtown Buffalo is usually a ghost town and you can park wherever you want, so we all take it personally when those darn Sabres mess it up by making people come here, what is wrong with y'all, messing up our nice clean empty city. Anyway.
Apparently the previous evening's game had been a nailbiter that the Caps had pulled away with right at the end.
So this afternoon, they were playing their second-string goalie, etc.

And it was a good game, but the Beauts got up onto the scoreboard a little before the end of the first period, and the Caps never joined them, though they fought like crazy and did take a fair number of shots throughout the game. The Beauts got up another one during a 4-on-4, and things got pretty heated, and then the Beauts got yet another goal during a power play, and finally won it 4-0. (A Beaut got popped in the face pretty bad with three seconds left on the clock, and I missed the shot of that happening but got the immediate followup when another Cap skated up to, very clearly, apologize.)

We had a lovely time; a family sat behind us and two little girls of about seven or eight went up to sit right against the boards in front of us, and mostly did laps of us unrelentingly; at one point they had some toys sitting right up against the glass, and then a pair of players slammed into the boards right there and sent the little toys flying and both girls leapt up, and were extremely excited about it; a minute or two later, in a scuffle, the puck shot straight up and came over the glass, and the one little girl's uncle caught it and handed it to her, which just bowled her over with awe. it was very cute.

There are about 110 photos over in the album on Flickr if this hasn't been enough hockey for you. (Also, I just discovered, the entire game is archived here, and I might rewatch it; I don't watch much hockey so there were a few times I was a bit sorry not to have any commentary to help me keep up!)
They're playing there again a number of times this season so I might try to scrape up some of my few remaining local friends to see a game with me. Also next time I'm bringing a seat cushion, those benches are hard.
(One of the things I loved to do at roller derby was take photos of the officials and behind-the-scenes people, so this was irresistible to me:)

Date: 2018-12-31 11:34 pm (UTC)I loved looking through the album! That one picture of the Beauts player making a face, love it!!! It's so cool to have the low view pictures since I watch so many games on the streams. Plus this game's corner cameras had some real shaky cam stuff going on. I also like the streams/commentary because I usually can't tell wtf is going on. At least I've seen enough RPI games to be able to recognize some of the players (they stream those too).
I will have to try and make a trip out there, I've never been. Blair Braverman on Twitter said to do something outdoors that is outside of our comfort zone and honestly, I've been thinking of going to Niagara Falls. No time like the present? If I did, it would probably have to be the weekend of the 26th. Idek, now I'm actually considering it.
Plus it's fun to go to hockey games with other people. Jade isn't super duper into hockey and she often is working late.

Date: 2019-01-01 01:14 am (UTC)I haven't finalized my plans for this month, I gotta go back east and see the family one of the weekends of January, but so far the 26th is un-spoken-for!
I was thinking I do want to see another game, so let me know.

Date: 2019-01-01 01:42 am (UTC)the third-stringer, though, is specifically from the little village we're in. i love how the roster doesn't just say Buffalo, it says tiny shit like "Kenmore" and "Clarence" like anyone actually cares what suburb. (Kenmore's not even really a suburb.) I wanted to see her play, she's not even a stub on wikipedia but i know there's a local restaurant or car lot or something that her family clearly owns because their name is on it.
