I am still deciding whether to spring for Flickr Pro as well. On my to-do list for holiday break is “see if Google has free photo storage and then decide if I’m willing to break down and finally get a Google account.”
So I went and looked at my Google account.
(results below cut)
It does have photos, it’s been copying over all the photos off of my phone without me really… knowing it was doing that? I mean, I sort of knew. It keeps popping up notifications on my phone that it’s made me a special collage (and it’s like, all the paperwork I just took photos of) or that it’s edited my photo for me (the last one it did this with was the dead rat in my driveway; it had put a super-saturation filter over it so the blood was really bright, and I was like… thanks) and sometimes it makes me a movie with all the photos I’ve taken of my cat, only it can’t tell the difference between my cat and my sister’s cat so it makes me a “meow movie” of the two of them interchanged with cameos from my sister’s cat’s brother, so like. And it’s always like “Revisit Your Photos:” and has photos from last year on this day. I don’t know how to make it stop doing that and I’m not quite annoyed enough to do so, but it’s literally never made me anything nice.
So the thing I really need with photo storage, though, is the ability to host images so I can hotlink. So I made an experimental attempt at this over on Dreamwidth, since I don’t actually know? how to post images on Tumblr? without uploading them???
It works for me. Flickr does a great thing where you hit “share” and it offers you the ability to embed and pops up a lil dialog box thing where you pick the size you want it to be and it generates you an embed code, with a link to the original, and that’s fantastic and all, and it’s got a little script code in it that I haven’t quite worked out what it’s for but I expect it’s tracking. I don’t mind, so I just use their code.
Google’s “share” function is meant to send links to whole albums to people– and it’s nice that you can change the security level on those albums, and such, but. I don’t want that.
So I right-clicked and opened just the image in a tab, and that gives me a really ugly image URL, but I can manually write an embed code myself, that’s not prohibitive, it’s just intimidating when I paste in the URL of the image and it’s like 10 lines long. Bonus, editing it in Dreamwidth’s HTML editor taught me how to manually put alt-text into HTML image tags so I’ll do that from now on.
But I don’t know if other people can see the embedded image, or if you have to be logged in as me to have access to it. I don’t know! So let me know!
ALso: @sugarspiceandcursewords where do i find you if Tumblr explodes??? Do I already have you somewhere else?? I have honestly lost track.
