I don’t have Spotify but my coworker does.

It’s probably really rude to do this but I follow Heems on Instagram and I know he works for Spotify now and is, like, their Desi editor, I know this from his Stories, and I’m bored of everything I’m used to listening to, so I just went over to my coworker’s computer (he’s not in yet, he works a slightly later shift than I do so we can cover the store’s open hours and also because he’s a late sleeper) and opened his Spotify desktop app and now i’m listening to Bhangra Bangers and it fucking bops ok, but he’s gonna be so annoyed because it’ll mess up his algorithm.

Sorry, I’m a bad person 2k18 style, but like, man, fuck algorithms.

Omg what a good playlist, new listening material! I love spotify although I don't use their recommended for me shit. I use it more for my few playlists offline and occasionally artist stations when I need some variety.

My coworker used to be a college radio DJ, so he actually has wide-ranging and deep tastes in music.
It's mostly white boy rock and such, but he was actually a very early fan of hip-hop, so he knows a fair bit about that scene, and so when he says he hates all current rap, he's at least approaching it from the perspective of someone who appreciated it at its inception, instead of just people who hate anything that isn't rock n roll.
And he hates everything after about 2000, which is sort of typical for people our age I think.
So his Spotify Recommended is often quite good. But at Halloween he made his friends a playlist that had a ton of really old boogie rock-n-roll stuff on it, and his algorithm has been messed-up ever since. So now it'll have a whole bunch of bhangra mixed in, why not!

I guess Heems has a whole bunch of South Asian playlists up on Spotify but I couldn't figure out how to browse them, I was just able to find that one because the name is distinctive.

My taste in music is: has a good beat and rhythm. I end up listening to a lot of pop so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ is my music taste

I also enjoy music in other languages because my brain doesn't catch onto the words and it fades to excellent background noise. It's nice to have some variety

I like good beat and rhythm too, and I quite enjoy languages I don't understand too for that same reason.
But I've gotten old and cranky, and I don't like autotune, and there's a kind of... slick over-produced chittery quality to a lot of current pop that I just-- can't. I might just be super old. I tried to put on Frank Ocean and didn't even make it through one song. There was no beat! He muttered a lot! I couldn't do it. So it's hard for me to figure out things I'll enjoy.

Unrelated, but I like that you're cross-posting to DW. Because I'm subscribed to so few people here, your stuff isn't getting lost in the firehose of content.

Also: re: toilet monsters, after reading more than one story about snakes coming up through the toilet in Australia, that's been one of my lowkey fears for years. Has never happened even once, and yet...

Yeah, I'm finding that to be the case with DW too-- I'm still checking in to Tumblr mostly out of habit, but I'm going to experiment with stopping posting on there for a while starting on the 17th, and then I might go back and unfollow everyone I've found on other platforms, and leave it a feed of just the people who refused to leave, so i can just check in once in a while and maybe have it be not a firehose.

Honestly I was wanting to step back from Tumblr anyway, because the overwhelming majority of the content was contextless reblogs of things I'd seen a million times. I don't mind seeing things a couple times, you do get different meaning on the repeats, but it was getting ridiculous.

My DW reading list isn't *quite* active enough yet, but I think I might wind up looking for some more people to follow on here, and making a point of joining some communities and things, and going from there, rather than supplementing it by still reading Tumblr.

Yeah as for toilet monsters, welcome to one of my nightmares! I keep repeating to myself that we don't have snakes, though. We don't! And my particular horror with that is that I'm terrified I'd injure or kill a snake by flushing the toilet-- it's why the thing I'm most afraid of about spiders is how easy they are to crush. Oh God! That's my phobia, squishing somebody. Ugh! Yikes! Argh.
