goodluckdetective:

This has been on my mind recently so I’m gonna come out and say it. Look, just because you have a mental illness that does not mean you get a free pass from behaviors that hurt people. It gives an explanation to the behavior sure but it doesn’t mean you can’t be held accountable.

I get it: I have anxiety and depression and ADHD. There is a lot of things that are difficult for me to do or traits I have that are unusual. When those traits don’t hurt anyone that’s fine. But when they do that doesn’t mean I can keep doing them blame free.

For example, I really hate doing the dishes because of a sensory issue that makes the smell and texture of everything just A LOT. Does this mean I can leave my dishes in the sink and expect my Dad to do them? No. What it means is I have to find an approach that works like wearing rubber gloves or getting a scrub brush for reach. I have issues with heights so I really hate using stepstools to dust, so I got a long armed swifter. Arguing politics with my relatives is terrifying for anxiety but someone has to call them out in policies that hurt others so I practice arguments ahead of time and prepare so I can do that effectively.

The illness doesn’t mean I get out of the work: it means I just have to find approaches to do it. Even if those approaches are still really hard.
