ok turkey processing round 2: electric boogaloo is about to begin and i am still in bed because Whiskey the yurt cat is being snuggly. she has put on a lot of weight this fall and is a tiny round fluffer and it’s very cute.
i don’t really need to be super early getting out there because i carefully washed, sanitized, and arranged all the various tools and things yesterday, so that everything can just get re-bleached this morning right before use. The expected difficulties with the barn have not materialized because there’s a propane greenhouse heater bolted to the wall currently, on super-low setting but still on, meaning it’s 45 degrees in there at the coldest. The reason for this is that the ice machine doesn’t work if it’s too cold, which I think is hilarious but also perfectly sensible; it can’t form the ice into water if the water is already not liquid, right? so.
it means the room is warm enough that nothing freezes and the hoses don’t get unmanageable either. as a complete side effect, it happens to be much more pleasant to work in there, so.
personal updates and meandering about nanowrimo behind the cut
i managed a few more words last night. i’m not totally out of the running for nanowrimo. they were not great words, though, i was kind of flinging ideas i’d had in the car (i drove both to and from school with the farmkid, so that was like, 40 minutes cumulatively in the car) at the page to remember them for later, not actually coming up with anything usable, but it’s better than nothing.
i’m under wordcount, but i’m not like. unattainably under. so.
Maryland sister arrives tonight with her load of family. Her husband is going deer hunting while here, so i was considering also going, but let’s be real, i do not have time or energy for that. ALSO: it is supposed to be ZERO DEGREES on Thanksgiving itself, and I will NOT be messing with that bullshit. I made a little side project for myself yesterday, to do the minimal level of furniture rearranging that I needed to do in order for the woodstove to be usable. It involved moving the dog’s bed, and she was actually kind of psyched about it, which is a nice side effect. So maybe we can have the woodstove going when it’s ass-bitingly cold, and not be quite so miserable. (It’s not that the heat never gets turned up in this house, but. Sometimes there’s nowhere that’s actually warm, and all the bundling-up in the world won’t help if you’ve managed to get yourself deeply chilled.)
My dude is coming Wednesday, arriving in time for supper hopefully. He did manage to get the snow tires onto his car. (When he was shopping for cars, the one thing people said about the car he picked was that it wasn’t great in snow, but snow tires helped, so he decided to just– be the kind of guy that has two sets of tires for his car, and while for me that would mean endless procrastinating and never having the right tires on the thing, for him that actually seems to have yielded great results, so.)
