I am SO EXCITED about everything you say about this book. And next week I think I’m going to take a train trip to nowhere (aka ride the train into Boston, which I can walk to, and maybe just have lunch by myself or something and ride back) just to get some writing done. Not a bad use of $12.
Really? Aw! I feel like this book has been just… setting and no hook, for a year now, but I’m finally finding that the characters are people I want to know, and that’s exciting to me, anyway.
I also figured out how to make the plot sort of work, though it’s still fudged. And there’s a bit where I was like, this won’t work if they’re all together, how can I make one of the characters go away, and then I wasn’t thinking about it and came up with a different plot thing that took the one character away from the others, and then I was like, head exploding guy gif oh my god that makes the whole plot climax work and then I can work in this other character I made up for no reason OMG!
So. I’m finally kind of excited about this. I hope you’re having some good luck as well.
Taking a train to nowhere actually sounds kind of lovely. I used to visit Boston occasionally as a child, my mom’s college roommate lives there and is a bigshot lawyer type (probably retired now) and so I think that was the first place I ever rode on public transportation, but I was quite small so I don’t remember it well and it’s all blurred together with NYC, where I spent a lot of time later.
I would take this Amtrak all the time but it’s almost $60 one way, which is sort of ridiculous. And you have to be careful which one you take– if you take the thru train that started in Chicago, you’ll be delayed forever, but if you take the Empire Line that originates in Buffalo, you’re fine. So I’m gonna book the Empire Line.
(There’s also the Maple Leaf, that originates in Toronto, but sometimes it gets hung up in Customs.)
