FUN FACT: IN MY NYS HUNTER SAFETY COURSE I LEARNED THAT FEMALE DEER CAN HAVE ANTLERS.
this is why some municipalities carefully use gender-neutral language about what kind of deer you can take– “deer with antlers”– which includes antlered females and excludes very young male deer– and other municipalities carefully use gendered language– “male deer”– and specify that carcasses must have genitals left on when tagged, so game wardens can verify. tl;dr Antlers are not legal proof of gender for white-tailed deer in NY State, but in some municipalities it is acceptable to shoot female deer with antlers because a hunter can’t be expected to be able to ascertain a deer’s sex from a distance.
