have they considered raising dairy bull calves at all? would probably be a more docil than beef and very cheap since dairy farmers have no use for them.
I think it’s hard to make much profit on livestock at all, and the slower growth rates of dairy bull calves would make it so you couldn’t break even, even though the calves would be cheap. You’d have to feed them forever to get enough cover on them to make the carcass salable. The cost of the animal is generally a negligible concern in livestock farming, but feed, transport, and processing for slaughter are incredibly expensive. We can’t certify anything organic if it wasn’t born here, basically, so there’s just literally nowhere in the business plan that bull calves would fit.

i have semi-seriously entertained the idea of owning goats some day if i ever have the land. probably dairy goats but i’ve also considered angoras. because fiber is super cool but i would never want to deal with sheep!
Honestly, goats seem more troublesome than sheep to me? They’re all fence-breakingly smart and in need of entertainment? The only real drawback I’m aware of with sheep is that every spring, the sheep farmers I know post videos of them assisting with lambings. !!! No thanks. No thanks! We’re spoiled; pigs give birth and you only find out about it later when fifteen tiny animals come running out of the pig house. An animal you’ve got to pull out is an animal that isn’t realistically going to make it on this farm.
